Djokovic, Sabalenka, Sinner and Gauff Reach Australian Open Third Round

Wednesday’s action at the Australian Open saw top seed Novak Djokovic need three hours and 11 minutes to dismiss local favourite Alexei Popyrin, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.

The 10-time champion will next face No. 30 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry for a place in the round of 16.

Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner, No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev, No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 10 Alex de Minaur and No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz all advanced to the round of 32.

No. 17 seed and crowd favourite Frances Tiafoe was sent packing in the second round, losing in straight sets to Tomas Machac.

On the women’s side, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka easily dismissed Brenda Fruhvirtova 6-3, 6-2. Sabalenka will take on No. 28 seed Lesia Tsurenko on Friday.

US Open winner Coco Gauff edged past Caroline Dolehide 7-6(2), 6-2, but No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur wasn’t as lucky as she was comprehensively defeated by Mirra Andreeva 6-0, 6-2.

Other women’s winners on the day included No. 9 seed Barbora Krejcikova, No. 10 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, American Alicia Parks, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Spaniard Paula Badosa.

Thursday’s schedule in Melbourne will feature top seed Iga Swiatek, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz, and No. 3 seeds Elena Rybakina and Daniil Medvedev.
