Alcaraz, Swiatek, Rune and Rybakina Advance to Australian Open Second Round

Tuesday’s action at the Australian Open featured top seed Iga Swiatek advance to the second round of the event, defeating former champion Sofia Kenin 7-6(2), 6-2.

Needing one hour and 51 minutes to move into the second round, Swiatek will face former finalist Danielle Collins on Thursday.

Elsewhere, last year’s finalist and former Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina joined fifth seed Jessica Pegula and former champion Victoria Azarenka in the round of 64.

Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu picked up a much-needed victory over Shelby Rogers in the opening round. The Brit, who was injured for most of the 2023 season, will next face Yafan Wang.

Other notable winners on the day included No. 11 seed Jelena Ostapenko and 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens.

On the men’s side, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz was challenged in the first set before easily dispatching Richard Gasquet, 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-2.

Spending two hours and 22 minutes on court, Alcaraz will take on Lorenzo Sonego in next round.

Other seeds to advance were No. 6 Alexander Zverev, No. 8 seed Holger Rune, No. 11 seed Casper Ruud, No. 13 seed Grigor Dimitrov, No. 14 seed Tommy Paul and local favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis.

An upset on the men’s side saw Indian star Sumit Nagal dismiss No. 31 seed Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-2, 7-5(5).

Wednesday’s schedule Down Under will be highlighted by top seed Novak Djokovic, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, No. 4 seed Jannik Sinner and reigning US Open winner Coco Gauff.
