Roland Garros—Paris, France

Unheralded Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild caused the biggest upset of 2023 French Open on Tuesday, defeating world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in four hours and 15 minutes.

Seyboth Wild, who is currently ranked No. 172 in the world, entered Roland Garros with a 9-15 career record.

By contrast, Medvedev entered the tournament by winning his first-ever Masters 1000 event in clay and was in great form.

Other action at the French Open featured last year’s finalists Casper Ruud and Coco Gauff both advancing to the second round.

Ruud needed three clear-cut sets to advance past Elias Ymer 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 and Gauff had to overcome the loss of the first set to defeat Rebeka Masarova 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Ruud will next face Giulio Zeppieri and Gauff will take on Austrian Julia Grabher.

Elsewhere, No. 16 seed Tommy Paul, No. 22 seed Alexander Zverev and No. 27 seed Yoshihito Nishioka all advanced to the second round. No. 31 seed wasn’t as lucky, losing a five-set thriller to Andrea Vavassori 5-7, 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(3), 7-6(9) in five hours and 10 minutes.

Sixteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva continued her stellar rise up the rankings by dispatching Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-2, 6-1.

Top seed Iga Swiatek breezed into the second, as to did No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 6 seed Holger Rune.
