Legg Mason Tennis Classic Quarterfinal Preview

August 6, 2010

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 05: Andy Roddick of the USA reacts to a shot against Gilles Simon of France during day 4 of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center on August 5, 2010 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Legg Mason Tennis Classic—Washington, D.C.

Thursday’s rain plagued third-round matches at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic ended with no Americans remaining in the draw.

Of the four US players to be eliminated, Andy Roddick’s departure at the hands of Gilles Simon was perhaps the most shocking. Mardy Fish’s 11-match winning streak was halted by No. 4 seed Marin Cilic, while John Isner lost his first ever third set tiebreak in Washington to Xavier Malisse. The most unassuming of all the US men, Ryan Sweeting, also lost in straight sets to Fernando Verdasco.

Marking the first time since 1969 that no American men have advanced to the quarterfinals in the US capital, Friday’s final eight line-up will feature the following four matches.

No. 1 seed Tomas Berdych will face Xavier Malisse in a third career meeting. Splitting two previous matches, the pair have not met since the Roma event in 2006. Berdych is taking part in his first tournament since reaching the finals of Wimbledon, while Malisse continues to enjoy a renaissance year on the circuit. The Belgium has reached five tour quarterfinals or better this year.

Malisse proved that he could tame the vicious serve of Isner on Thursday, but he will have to contend with the much better ground game of Berdych on Friday.

Elsewhere, Verdasco will attempt to reach his sixth semifinal of the year when he takes on Marcos Baghdatis in a first time meeting. Verdasco saved a match point in his first-round victory over Michael Berrer, and was efficient in dismissing American Sweeting in the previous round. Verdasco, who is playing in Washington for the first time, continues to make the transition into his new Dunlop frame. The Spaniard should be relatively fresh during the forthcoming hard-court stretch, considering that he lost early at Wimbledon and the French Open. Baghdatis is also a first time attendee at the event.

Other quarterfinal matches on the day will feature:

Janko Tipsarevic vs. No. 4 seed Marin Cilic, and David Nalbandian vs. Frenchman Simon. Tipsarevic continues his fine form from Los Angeles, but will have to overcome a 4-0 head-to-head series deficit against his Croatian opponent. Cilic has been in a slump as of late, but has always thrived on the hard-courts of North America. The lanky Croat ended Fish’s respectable streak yesterday, and it’s likely that he’ll be too strong for Tipsarevic once again.

The day’s final match will see two players who are returning to action from injury. Nalbandian is playing in his first official event since Monte Carlo, while Simon continues to rebound into form after suffering from a knee injury. The counter-punching pair have never met on Tour, and although they play a similar brand of tennis, Nalbandian does hold more variety in his game and that should pay dividends over the course of the encounter.

Roddick, Verdasco, and Isner in Action on Day 5 in Washington

August 5, 2010

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 03: Andy Roddick of the USA dries off against Grega Zemlja of Slovenia during day 2 of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center on August 3, 2010 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Legg Mason Tennis Classic—Washington, D.C.

Thursday’s third-round action at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic will feature three-time champ Andy Roddick, tournament first-timer Fernando Verdasco, and rising American star John Isner.

After sweeping aside Grega Zemlja in comfortable fashion on Tuesday, Roddick will face former top six player Gilles Simon for a place in the quarterfinals. Simon is a fraction of the player that he used to be, and should provide little resistance towards Roddick during the evening session clash. After a sustaining a knee injury at the tail of last season, Simon has won a mere six matches on Tour this year, while losing eight times. Roddick does lead the pair’s head-to-head series 2-0, with both victories coming on hard-courts.

Roddick remains in desperate need of some tournament hardware before heading into the US Open, while keeping his dreams alive of capturing a second Grand Slam title in New York.

Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Fernando Verdasco will bid for a quarterfinal appearance when he faces Ryan Sweeting of the United States. Spending nearly three hours on-court against his second-round opponent Michael Berrer, Verdasco will be focused on an easier scoreline against Sweeting..

Never facing Sweeting on Tour, Verdasco will be up against the powerful and exuberant right-handed serve of his opponent. Sweeting, who defeated James Blake and Michael Llodra en route, has proved that he can beat the big boys this week. The No. 119 ranked Fort Lauderdale native remains on the cusp of reaching the world’s top 100.

Verdasco has struggled since pulling in a tough clay-court season, and could be prone to an upset against Sweeting. Stay tuned.

The day’s final highlighted match with pit John Isner against talented Belgium Xavier Malisse. Defeating his Wimbledon conqueror Thiemo De Bakker in the second-round, Isner won’t be shy in going the distance against Malisse on Thursday. Holding his serve (literally) throughout the majority of this season, Isner has gained the reputation of never giving up, while becoming almost impossible to break.

Losing to Malisse earlier this year at the Houston event (in three tiebreak sets no less), Isner will look to draw on the form that took him to the finals of Washington in 2007.

Other third-round matches that will take place on Thursday in D.C. will include:

Mardy Fish vs. Marin Cilic, Tomas Berdych vs. Andrey Golubev, David Nalbandian vs. Marco Chiudinelli, Illya Marchenko vs. Marcos Baghdatis, and Janko Tipsarevic vs. Alejandro Falla.

Berdych and Querrey Highlight Play During Day 4 Action at Legg Mason

August 4, 2010

Legg Mason Tennis Classic—Washington, D.C.

Top seed Tomas Berdych will make his first appearance on tour since reaching the finals of Wimbeldon at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Wednesday.

Beginning his US Open Series in Washington this year, Berdych will face hard-hitting Russian Dmitry Tursunov in second-round action. Holding a 3-1 head-to-head series lead over Tursunov, Berdych will be adamant to improve on his past trips to Washington, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2009, and the semifinals in 2005.

Berdych will be matched off of the ground by Tursunov, who is pound for pound one of the biggest hitters in the game. The flamboyant Russian has been sidelined with an ankle injury for most of this year, and only recently returned to action at the French Open. Holding a 1-3 record on the season, Tursunov is currently ranked No. 514 in the world.

The Russian defeated countryman Teymuraz Gabasvili in first-round action.

Berdych will be a name to watch during the road to the US Open this year. The poised and confident Czech has put forth stellar results this year, and has historically played his best tennis on hard-courts. Holding a dynamic blend of power and agility, Berdych could become the most recent edition to a decade which has been ruled by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Elsewhere, recent LA Open winner Sam Querrey will attempt to not only increase his winning streak to six matches, but in the process continue to build on his mental fortitude. Although Querrey has four titles to his credit this season, he has yet to breakthrough during a Grand Slam or Masters event. The Las Vegas native has proved that he can win his share of 250 point events, and even took a 500 series tournament in Memphis during the winter. However, the American has shown mental frailty when it’s mattered, and he will have the opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong with the upcoming stretch of big tournaments in North America.

Querrey will face Janko Tipsarevic today for the second time in less than a week. Defeating the Serb in three thrilling sets during the semifinals in Los Angeles, Querrey was forced to overcome a set and 5-1 deficit in the second set tiebreak to advance. Owning the second most titles on the circuit this season after Nadal, who has five, Querrey will be another hot player to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Other matches that will take place on day four action in D.C. will feature:

Lleyton Hewitt vs. Alejandro Falla, Marcos Baghdatis vs. Horacio Zeballos, Stanislas Wawrinka vs. David Nalbandian, Andrey Golubev vs. Kristof Vliegen, Ernests Gulbis vs. Illya Marcenko, and Radek Stepanek vs. Marco Chiudinelli.

Roddick, Verdasco, and Fish Highlight Day 3 Action in Washington

August 3, 2010

July 15, 2010 - Bastad, Sk ne, Sweden - epa02249254 Spain's Fernando Verdasco returns a ball to France's Stephane Robert during the second round of the Skistar Swedish Open tennis tournament in Bastad, Sweden, on July 15, 2010. Verdasco defeated Robert in 6-1, 6-1.

Legg Mason Tennis Classic—Washington, D.C.

Day three action at the ATP World Tour 500 series event in Washington, D.C. will be highlighted by men’s first and second-round action.

In need of a boost in confidence, No. 2 seed Andy Roddick will face unknown Slovak player Grega Zemlja for a place in the third-round. Roddick, who has captured the title in Washington on three occasions, enters D.C. this year without a title or finals appearance since winning in Miami.

Falling to the No. 9 ranking in the world, Roddick could be in danger of exiting the top 10 if he continues his poor string of form. Never playing his No. 128th ranked opponent, Roddick will be the first match on during this evening’s night session.

No. 3 seed Fernando Verdasco will take his baseline game to the heat of the day session against German Michael Berrer. Losing four out of his last five matches on Tour, Verdasco will take a 2-0 head-to-head series lead against his German opponent.

Verdasco, who is making his debut in Washington this year, spent last week training in Las Vegas in order to better prepare for the summer hard-court season. Verdasco currently holds a 12-5 record on hard-courts this season. The Spaniard has not played on hard-courts since losing in the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters 1000.

Elsewhere, Mardy Fish will bring his 10-match winning streak into a second-round match against Serb Viktor Troicki. Winning in Newport and Atlanta during the month of July, Fish remains a forerunner to capture this summer’s US Open Series title. Fish, a two-time quarterfinalist at the event, has never played Troicki on tour.

The No. 50 ranked Serbian reached the finals in Washington in 2008, losing to defending champ Juan Martin del Potro.

Other matches that will take place on Tuesday will include:

John Isner vs. Thiemo de Bakker, Gilles Simon vs. Igor Kunitsyn, Ryan Sweeting vs. Michael Llodra, Denis Istomin vs. Marin Cilic, Julien Benneteau vs. Xavier Malisse, Richard Gasquet vs. Kristof Vliegen, Yen-Hsun Lu vs. Alejandro Falla, Brian Dabul vs. Marco Chiudinelli, and Janko Tipsarevic vs. Arnaud Clement.
