Goffin Wins Shenzhen Title; Istomin Captures Chengdu Crown

Shenzhen Open—Shenzhen, China

No. 2 seed David Goffin took home his first title of 2017 at the Shenzhen Open on Sunday, defeating No. 5 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. In a match that lasted two hours and three minutes, Goffin served 15 aces to no double faults and broke the serve of his Ukrainian opponent on four occasions. Tying his head-to-head with Dolgopolov at 1-1, Goffin won his first title since Metz in 2014. The Belgian had lost his two previous finals earlier this year, both in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and Sofia, Bulgaria.

Dolgopolov, who was in search of his fourth career final, appeared in his third title of 2017. The 28-year-old won the title in Buenos Aires, Argentina earlier this year but recently lost in the final of Bastad, Sweden.

Chengdu Open—Chengdu, China

Denis Istomin won his second career title on the ATP World Tour on Sunday, defeating Marcos Baghdatis 3-2 ret. in Chengdu, China. Needing only 23 minutes to seal the crown, Istomin prevailed when his opponent retired with back spasms. Baghdatis had complained about back spasms after his semifinal victory over Guido Pella.

Winning his second career title, Istomin had previously won the title in Nottingham, Great Britain back in 2015.

Baghdatis, who was in search of his fifth career title, fell to 4-10 in championship matches.
