Federer cruises over Raonic to reach quarterfinals in Australia; Murray, Tsonga and Chardy advance

No. 2 seed Roger Federer reached his 35th straight grand slam quarterfinal on Monday in Melbourne, Australia, defeating Canadian Milos Raonic in three sets. Winning 90 percent of his first serve points, Federer struck 34 winners to 12 unforced errors. The Swiss great will next face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who dismissed fellow countryman Richard Gasquet in four sets. Other fourth-round winners on the day included Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy. Murray carved out a routine win over Gilles Simon in three sets, while Chardy reached his first career major quarterfinal after he ousted Andreas Seppi in four sets. Tuesday’s action Down Under will feature David Ferrer vs. Nicolas Almagro and Novak Djokovic vs. Tomas Berdych.
