Top seed Novak Djokovic needed five hours and three match points to dismiss the stern challenge of Stan Wawrinka on Monday morning in Melbourne, Australia to reach the final eight. Winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(5), 12-10, Djokovic will have to recover quickly as he next faces a fresh Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Ferrer cruised by Kei Nishikori in three sets, while Almagro made his first quarterfinal at a hard-court major when Janko Tipsarevic retired while trailing 6-2, 5-1 with a jarred heel.
