Djokovic wins marathon over Wawrinka in Melbourne; Ferrer, Berdych and Almagro prevail

Top seed Novak Djokovic needed five hours and three match points to dismiss the stern challenge of Stan Wawrinka on Monday morning in Melbourne, Australia to reach the final eight. Winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(5), 12-10, Djokovic will have to recover quickly as he next faces a fresh Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. Berdych was a straight sets winner earlier in the day over Kevin Anderson of South Africa. Other winners on Sunday included David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer cruised by Kei Nishikori in three sets, while Almagro made his first quarterfinal at a hard-court major when Janko Tipsarevic retired while trailing 6-2, 5-1 with a jarred heel. Monday’s schedule at the Australian Open will be highlighted by Roger Federer vs. Milos Raonic.
