Federer, Murray and Tsonga into final 16 in Melbourne; del Potro ousted by Chardy

Top seed Roger Federer brushed aside the young challenge of Bernard Tomic at the Australian Open on Saturday, defeating the Aussie in three tidy sets. The four-time winner will next face hard-serving Canadian Milos Raonic. The 22-year-old dismissed Philipp Kohlschreiber for his second appearance in the final 16 in Melbourne. Other winners on the day included Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Andreas Seppi and Gilles Simon. Simon needed four hours and 47 minutes to dispatch countryman Gael Monfils in five sets. Sunday’s action Down Under will feature Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer.
