The China Open Organising Committee is pleased to announce that World No. 2 Novak Djokovic will be the fourth ATP World Tour Top 10 player to join the 2012 China Open to be held in Beijing from 23 September to 7 October.
Djokovic, who missed the 2011 China Open due to an injury, will be looking to continue his undefeated run at the National Tennis Center, a venue that has proven to become one of his luckiest, after capturing the 2009 and 2010 titles. However his task will not be easy in a field that will contain Rafael Nadal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Ferrer.
The 25-year-old Serbian occupied the World No. 1 ranking for 53 consecutive weeks only surrendering his position after losing to eventual champion Roger Federer in their semi final match at Wimbledon.
As one of the hottest stars on the ATP World Tour, Djokovic’s talented and comprehensive match skills mixed with his humorous and approachable personality has seem him gain great popularity amongst Chinese tennis fans.
The World No. 2 is very excited to be returning to the 2012 China Open, “I was reallydisappointed that I couldn’t play in Beijing last year because of my injury, so I am really looking forward to going back to play the China Open this year. The tournament holds special memories for me, as I have a great record there, and I can’t wait to return to Beijing to play in front of all my fans”.
Tournament Director, Alfred Zhang said, “Last year, unfortunately Novak withdrew at the last minute due to injury, which was a big disappointment for the fans, but he is playing incredible tennis again this season and we are excited that the fans can see him at the China Open this year.
“So far, four of the top six ATP players have confirmed their participation, and we are trying our best to build an all-star lineup for our fans.”
Djokovic will also feature in the 2012 China Open TVC, which was filmed in Madrid in May and will be released soon.
The Serbian still remembers a lot of the shoot saying, “This was the first time that I have had to dress up as a magician for a television commercial. It was a very different experience as normally we are wearing our tennis clothes and holding a racquet. The opportunity to do something a little bit different and more creative was good. I really enjoyed the experience.”
