Monaco bests Fish to reach Miami semifinals; Djokovic outlasts Ferrer

No. 21 seed Juan Monaco made the most of his birthday at the Sony Ericsson Open on Thursday, defeating No. 8 seed Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

Totally dominating the contest from start to finish, Monaco won 71 percent of his first serve points, while breaking the big serving American on five occasions.

Taking out Gael Monfils and Andy Roddick prior to scoring his top 10 victory, Monaco will next face Novak Djokovic for a place in the finals. Djokovic withstood a second set onslaught by David Ferrer to defeat the Spaniard, 6-2, 7-6(1).

Friday’s other semifinal will feature Rafael Nadal vs. Andy Murray.
