Kirilenko Backs Boyfriend Andreev to Beat Federer

After ousting former world No.1 Maria Sharapova on Day 1 action, Russian Maria Kirilenko backed her boyfriend Igor Andreev to post a similar upset over world No. 1 Roger Federer.

Andreev, who tested Federer in a losing five-set effort during the 2008 US Open, will face the three-time champion Tuesday afternoon in Melbourne.

Kirilenko, who posted one of the best wins of her career over Sharapova, spoke about Andreev’s chances.

“Before the matches he said that we can start the year loud,” said Kirilenko.  “And I have already started the year loud.  So now it’s his turn.  Of course, it’s going to be tough, but in the first round you never know what’s going to happen.”

Andreev and Federer will collide on Rod Laver Arena after two women’s singles matches.
