Former world No. 2 Tommy Haas has confirmed his participation for the upcoming US Men’s Clay Court Championship, which will be held April 5-11, 2010.
Haas, who won the event in 2004 (d. Andy Roddick), will join a quality field which will include Fernando Gonzalez and Sam Querrey.
Tournament directer Van Berry, who runs the week-long 32-man tournament, commented on the benefit of having Haas present at the event, which will be held at the River Oaks Country Club.
“Tommy has always been a fan favourite here, and we are thrilled that he is returning to River Oaks,” Tournament Director Van Barry said. “It’s still early in 2010, and already a great field is coming together for the tournament in April with three members of the Top 25 in singles as well as the No. 1 doubles team committed to the event. We expect it to be another great tournament week.”
Previously held on red clay, the US Men’s Clay Court Championships changed to green clay (har-tru) in 2008. The change was due to the cost and maintenance of red clay.
Haas, who owns a 15-6 record at the event, will use the American tournament to hone his skills for the year’s second Major in Paris.
Haas tested eventual champion Roger Federer in the fourth round of Roland Garros last year, taking the Swiss star to five sets. Haas led by two sets-to-love in that encounter.
