Current world No. 5 and reigning US Open Champ Juan Martin del Potro will replace Andy Murray as the No. 4 player in the world following the Doha, Qatar event.
Murray, who will not be defending his title in Qatar, will lose the 250 ATP World Tour points he accumulated by defeating Andy Roddick in last year’s championship match.
Del Potro, who currently holds 6,785 ATP World Tour points, will surpass Murray by five points in the world rankings on January 11th, 2010. Murray currently holds 7,030 ATP World Tour points.
Murray’s impact heading into the year’s first Major as the No. 5 seed could be interesting to say the least. Depending on how the draw unfolds in Melbourne, the Scot could face the powerful foursome of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or del Potro in the quarterfinals—something that hasn’t happened since September of 2008.
Federer and Nadal are scheduled to play in Qatar after they participate in a three day exhibition in Abu Dhabi.
Murray will head to Perth, Australia where he will partake in the Hopman Cup mixed team challenge event.
The 23-year-old will represent Great Britain with youngster Laura Robinson.
The Hopman Cup takes place January 2-9, 2010.
